In the heart of Heraklion, Crete, a new museum opens its doors to offer a unique experience to video game enthusiasts. The Video Games Museum is a space dedicated to the history, evolution, and cultural significance of video games, inviting visitors of all ages to discover the magic of gaming through an interactive journey.

The museum features a permanent exhibition with more than 300 original consoles, spanning decades of gaming history. From the earliest systems of the 1970s to the most modern consoles, visitors have the chance to witness the technological evolution of gaming and learn the stories behind each device. The exhibition is enhanced with interactive multimedia, including images, videos, and audio, offering a complete experience.

But the museum isn’t limited to its permanent collection. The first temporary exhibition, titled Choose Your Weapon, explores the history and development of video game controllers. From classic joysticks to modern motion-sensing designs, visitors can see and try various controllers, gaining insight into how they shaped the way we play. In addition, themed spaces like the 1980s living room and the 1990s kids’ bedroom accurately recreate the atmosphere of those decades, offering a nostalgic experience for those who grew up with games from that era.

With over 50 retro gaming stations, the museum provides an unparalleled hands-on experience. Visitors can enjoy classic arcade cabinets, explore physical games from the past, and try board games linked to video game history. Education is a cornerstone of the museum’s mission, connecting games with art, technology, and culture, and offering visitors of all ages opportunities to deepen their understanding of how video games have shaped the world.

One of the museum’s most impressive areas is The Vault, a treasure trove that houses thousands of physical video games from various decades. This collection serves as a vital resource for preserving gaming heritage, offering researchers, fans, and future generations a comprehensive archive of one of the most influential media forms in modern history. The Video Games Museum is the first Greek museum to officially join EFGAMP (European Federation of Game Archives, Museums and Preservation Projects), recognizing the importance of preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of video games at the European level.

The museum is located at 20 Peidadou Street, in the center of Heraklion, and is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00. For more information, you can visit the museum’s official website at www.videogamesmuseum.org
